Does Iceland Still Have Travel Restrictions?

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

Iceland travel restrictions

It was quite a controversial decision when the country opted to remain open to tourists. Basically, that’s because Iceland just implemented travel restrictions when Covid broke out. But, then, Iceland heavily relies on tourism to stay afloat.

The country might be one of the biggest islands in the world, but it’s still a small country compared to others. 490 km wide and 312 km long, to be precise, and with a population of just under 400 000.

Luckily, due to the size of the country, Covid was never as big a problem as in some other parts of the world. The isolation of the island, and the remote regions it consists of, helped on that task.

Today, travelers still want to know if Iceland has travel restrictions. In this article, we answer all your most frequently asked Iceland Covid questions and give you the lowdown on any/all Iceland Covid rules.

Iceland entry requirements

Does Iceland Require a Covid Vaccine?

You do not need to get the vaccine to enter Iceland. There was a pre-registration form that needed to be completed, but since February 2022, this is also no longer necessary.

Does Iceland Have Any Entry Requirements?

Iceland no longer has any border-related Covid restrictions when it comes to traveling to the island. As mentioned, you don’t need to be fully vaccinated to enter the country, and you no longer need a PCR test before boarding the plane. You will not be randomly tested at the airport and you will not be expected to quarantine.

Does Iceland Have Any Travel Requirements on Flights?

There are no more Covid-related travel requirements on flights in Iceland. That applies to both, international or domestic. You can expect your flight to feel and look like any flight pre-Covid.

Why Iceland Never Needed Drastic Covid Restrictions

Iceland’s focus was on proactive measures instead of playing dramatic defense on the Covid frontlines. They followed very strict testing and tracing protocol. This and the low population density across the island, helped keep infection levels low. So you get an idea, almost 70% of Iceland’s population lives in the capital region.

What Happens Should You Get Covid in Iceland?

Well, you’re definitely not going to find yourself in an ET situation. Don’t expect any isolation bubble with a bunch of government officials in hazmat suits. If against all odds you do contract the illness during your trip, no further actions are needed. Iceland merely recommends that you be considerate and let others know of your status.

It is also recommended that you isolate for five days. Then follow special precautions such as always wearing a mask whilst out and about for another 2 days. It’s never fun getting ill whilst on holiday.

But once again, the chances of contracting Covid in Iceland in the first place are very small.

Take That Trip!

As mentioned earlier, Covid is here to stay. Not in the same disastrous way it swept and devoured countries, but still ever-present. Just like measles, the flu, and the other diseases we now have vaccines for.

If we allow the past to dictate our future and let unnecessary fear direct our lives, we’ll be missing out on some truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences. So book that trip and travel to Iceland!
